Message from the Head of the Department

Established in 2014, the Central Department of Social Work offers MSW and MPhil leading to PhD programs that connect classroom theory with hands-on learning through coursework and field placements. As the Head of this vibrant academic community, I extend a warm welcome to all BSW, MSW, MPhil, and PhD students, as well as our distinguished faculty members, alumni, and national and international partners. Grounded in the enduring values of social justice, service, human dignity, human rights, equity, inclusion, meaningful relationships, and sustainable participatory development, we support students in gaining practical experience through placements in municipalities, social service agencies, organisations, hospitals, schools, daycare centres, and communities. These opportunities enable students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings while developing professional competence and leadership skills. As we navigate an increasingly complex world, we encourage our students and scholars to cultivate empathy, critical thinking, ethical integrity, and evidence-based practice. Our graduates are equipped with the knowledge, skills, values, and ethics needed to work effectively with individuals, groups, and communities, particularly those experiencing deprivation and vulnerability. They are prepared to strengthen social and economic services and promote social justice for all members of society. Together, through knowledge, community engagement, and stakeholder partnerships, we can build a more just, inclusive, empathetic, and service-oriented society by aligning professional social work practice with collective and traditional support systems.
